The AQEIPS has worked on several projects over the years!

Here is a list of some of the activities we have been a part of:

  • Participation in the “Ensemble pour une communauté plus inclusive pour les personnes en situation de handicap et les personnes Sourdes” event on February 7, 2013 at the YWCA Montreal
  • Participation in the MONTRÉAL*in/accessible event on November 15, 2012
  • Participation in the Montreal Special Needs Fair in September of 2011 and 2012
  • Participation in YWCA Canada’s Youth Eco Internship Fair (December 2010)
  • Ongoing participation in round table discussions organized by the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse on the obligation to accommodate educational needs at the college level
  • Consulted by the OPHQ to give input on a document titled “Milieu associatif des personnes en situation de handicap” (November  2010)
  • Asked by the Office for Disability Issues (Human Resources and Skills Development Canada) to give initial input on the design of a website/guide outlining the best practices for accessibility in post-secondary academic institutions (October 2010)
  • Ongoing participation and collaboration with COPHAN’s Education committee
  • Ongoing participation and collaboration with COPHAN’s Women’s Committee
  • Ongoing collaboration with student volunteers from ProBono UQAM who have greatly enriched our understanding of several legal aspects regarding the rights of post-secondary students living with disabilities.
  • Participation (as members of COPHAN) in the “Rencontres” meeting on inclusive education in Quebec City with Line Beauchamp, the Minister of Education (October 2010)
  • Participation in the McGill Institute for Health and Social Policy’s 2010-2011 Speaker Series titled “Disability and Equity across the Life Course”. Presentations attended:
    • “Providing Equitable Access for University Students with Disabilities: Issues and Challenges Faced by Students, Service Providers and Institutions” by Joan Wolforth (November 18, 2010)
    • “Disability and Disability Studies Enters the Academy” by Rod Michalko (November 4, 2010)
    • “Moving from a UN Convention to Making Rights Real on the Ground” by Michael Stein (September 22, 2010)
  • Presentation of a paper titled “Chronic Illness as Disability: The Challenges Faced by Post-Secondary Students and Graduates Living with Chronic Illness in and around the City of Montreal” at the NEADS National Conference in Winnipeg, Manitoba (November 2010)
  • Employment of Lucette Manuella Koffi through the Youth Eco-Internships of the YWCA program (Eco-Stages Jeunesse de l’YWCA) (October – December 2010)
  • Publication of the article “Resources and Services for Individuals Living with a Health-Related Disability” in the McGill University Health and Centre Lupus Clinic Newsletter
  • Publication of the article “Accommodations for Students Living with Health-Related Disabilities” in Voices, The Canadian Arthritis Patient Alliance newsletter
  • One-day training for board members and employees offered by Maria Barile of EcoAccess (September 2010)
  • Mobilized members to sign a Canada-wide petition urging the government to reconsider its decision to eliminate the census long-form questionnaire and replace it with a voluntary survey (August 2010)
  • Presentation of paper titled “Students with Disabilities in Post-Secondary Education in Quebec: The AQEIPS Perspective” at the Canadian Disability Studies Association conference at Concordia University in Montréal  (June 2010)
  • Participation in the Confédération des Organismes de Personnes Handicapées du Québec (COPHAN) annual general meeting in Montréal (June 2010)
  • Organization of workshop titled “Do the ‘Right’ Thing: Know Your Rights” in conjunction with the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse in Montreal  (April 2010)
  • Participation in a roundtable discussion on inclusive education organized by the Standing Committee on Social Affairs, Science and Technology (Comité permanent des affaires sociales, des sciences et de la technologie) at the Canada Senate (April 2010)
  • Representation and information kiosk set up at the “Au-delà de la différence” event hosted by Cégep Saint-Jérôme in Saint-Jérôme (April 2010)
  • Presentation of paper titled “Using a Social Model of Disability Framework for Supporting Post-secondary Students with Disabilities” at the Canadian Association for the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment in Higher Education (CAPDHHE) Conference in Montreal (April 2010)
  • Participation in the “Journée de sensibilisation aux étudiants en situation de handicap” event held at UQAM in Montréal (April 2010)
  • Mobilized members in support of the Coalition opposée à la tarification et à la privatisation des services public’s initative to protest projected changes to the accessibility of public services (March 2010)
  • Representation at the NEADS Job Search Strategies Forum in Quebec City (March 2010)
  • Presentation of paper titled “The Experiences of Young Women Living with Chronic Illness in their Pursuit of Higher Education” as part of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada’s International Women’s Day celebrations in Ottawa (March 2010)
  • Revision of the AQEIPS by-laws and internal policies to ensure, among other things, the financial transparency and accountability of our association (February 2010)
  • Mobilized members in an initiative to denounce the inaccessibility of sales terminals, particularly with regards to touch screen payment methods (February 2010)
  • Offered a number of training and awareness-raising sessions on the realities of persons with disabilities who are survivors of sexual assault to volunteers of the Sexual Assault Centre of McGill Students (SACOMMS) (September 2009, February and September 2010)
  • Mobilized students with disabilities to address their concerns regarding the inaccessibility of public transportation during the winter months across the province of Quebec (January 2010)
  • Representation at the Médiadiversité event (January 2010)
  • Mobilized members in support of a letter writing campaign initiated by the Groupe Femmes, Politique et Démocratie addressing the dismantling of gun control laws in Canada (December 2009)
  • Initiated a letter writing campaign to various Regional Health and Social Service Boards and the Ministère de la Santé et des Services Sociaux addressing accessibility issues during the H1N1 immunization campaign (November 2009)
  • Mobilized members in a letter writing campaign to municipal election candidates asking what place, if any, was given to persons with disabilities in their platform (October 2009)
  • Mobilized members to assess the fire evacuation drills at their school in order to evaluate the measures that have been taken to ensure that the safety of persons with disabilities is accounted for during evacuation procedures (October 2009)
  • Mobilized members in a letter writing campaign to municipal election candidates asking about what priority was being given to persons with disabilities in their platform (October 2009)
  • Organization of a workshop titled “Learning Disabilities and Reasonable Accommodation” in conjunction with the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse  (October 2009)
  • Joined forces with the Association des étudiantEs de l’université du Québec à Montréal to address the problems students have encountered with the new procedures for the allocation of the Allowance for Special Needs Program (September 2009)
  • Participated in the CRVA-MM annual general meeting (September 2009)
  • Acted as consultant to the Fédération étudiante universitaire du Québec in their study on the services offered to students with disabilities throughout the province (August 2009)
  • Supported the Association des paraplégiques du Québec in their campaign to contest the RAMQ’s decision to limit the speed of powered wheelchairs to 10 km/hr (July 2009)
  • Acted as consultant to a study conducted by the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesseon the special needs of college students with disabilities (July 2009)
  • Participation in a COPHAN seminar on “À part entire: pour un veritable exercise du droit à l’égalité,” a new governmental policy of the OPHQ to promote the inclusion of persons with disabilities in our society (June 2009)
  • Representation at the “Semaine québécoise des personnes handicapées” organized by the OPHQ (June 2009)
  • Participation in the Confédération des Organismes de Personnes Handicapées du Québec (COPHAN) annual general meeting in Montréal (June 2009)
  • Representation at the NEADS 2008 Job Search Strategies Forum in Montreal (March 2009)
  • Representation at the Critical Disability Graduate Student Conference at York University in Toronto (March 2009)
  • One day upgrade training for new managers, volunteers and employees (August 2008)

  • Launching of the Répertoire sur l’accessibilité et les services offerts aux étudiants ayant des limitations fonctionnelles dans les établissements postsecondaires au Québec (December 1997)
  • Participation in the forum organised by the Fédération québécoise de la réadaptation physique sur la continuité de services (October 1997)
  • Retreat and training workshops as part of the annual “Lac à l’Épaule” activity
