The Independent Living – Montérégie center was established in 2005 by Le Regroupement des Personnes Handicapées du Haut-Richelieu. It offers four fundamental services of the Independent Living Canada organization:
- Information and Networking: provides information pertaining to the services and programs offered in the Montérégie region put into place to remove barriers to independent living;
- Peer Support: offers peer support to individuals living with a disability with the goal of sharing experiences and help solve problems.
- Development of Skills for Independent Living: develops skills for independent living. It teaches self-defence, individual rights, ways to deal with discrimination, how to make decisions and take risks;
- Research and Community Development: research and development activities based on promoting awareness of disability issues, verifying accessibility to web sites and initiatives for the prevention of crime and abuse.
